On August 29th I was on Radio ones EenVandaag in the item ‘Fact or Fiction: Designer bags from the past are of better quality’. An item like that of a total of 3:24 minutes is of course much too short to really go into such a subject in depth, but it is crystal clear that there is a difference between ‘back then’ and now. And that is certainly in the quality of the leather, but also in the desire of the consumer to buy a trend-sensitive item that cannot have a single speck wrong with it and that cannot be damaged or dirty.
Leather is made from animal skins. These animals are not all the same and sometimes get wounds during their lives. It is therefore impossible to make 20 exactly the same products from ten untreated animal skins. That is why the leather is made very thin and provided with coatings and finishes so that we can produce thousands of exactly the same spotless beige bags. And yes, that is at the expense of quality.
Unfortunately I couldn't fit that into this short item but it certainly became a nice item. Missed the broadcast? Here you can find the link to the fragment.
In my webshop you will find many bags that are made of quality leather. After a good cleaning, these used bags can still be used for years. You are not only doing yourself a favor with such a quality bag, but also the environment!
