The Dutch Design label Kop en Staart was the first shoe label of Nijmegen-based designer Ilse Horck. At first Ilse only designed shoes, but she soon added bags to her range. The Kop en Staart collections are characterized by the original use of materials and unique, wearable models.
Kop en Staart stands for quality. The shoes and bags are made of high-quality leathers in beautiful colours and colour combinations. What was special about these colour combinations was that the shopkeeper could choose his own favourite design based on a wide range of colours and leathers. The production process was then closely followed by Ilse, who personally visited the factory several times a year.
Ilse studied at the Arnhem School of the Arts and in 1997 she designed her first collection of shoes, which were completely red. In 1998 she founded Kop en Staart (which can be translated as Head and tail). During the Covid period, the Kop en Staart collections proved to be too laborious and she started a new label: MadOre.
The pre-loved Mary-Jane’s in my webshop are from the very first Kop en Staart collection from 1999! They are made of beautiful vegetable tanned leather in a warm brown shade. It is a very special design: to be honest, it took me a few evenings to figure out how to wear them. The heel piece is extended and can be rolled up in different ways. I have shown two ways in the pictures, but who knows, you might come up with one or two more!
